Seeing the whole system before solving the problem
Every organisational outcome is connected. Healthy organisations understand the system well enough to solve the right problem.

The main change that happened, ironically, was the team’s ability to say no.

CASE STUDY
Every organisational outcome is connected.
Our work with one government organisation showed how stepping back to understand the whole system created focus and capacity.
Leaders rarely face isolated problems. A decline in performance may appear to be a capability issue. Resistance to change may appear to be a communication issue. Slow decision-making may appear to be a leadership issue.
Across our work, we’ve consistently observed that these challenges are rarely independent. They are symptoms of a broader system.
Leadership influences trust. Trust shapes confidence. Confidence affects decision-making. Decision-making influences culture. Culture ultimately determines performance. The healthiest organisations recognise these relationships before deciding where to intervene.
Faced with increasing workloads, competing priorities and growing organisational complexity, the instinct could easily have been to add more resources or redesign individual teams. Instead, leaders stepped back to understand how work flowed across the broader system.
Healthy organisations don’t attempt to solve every problem.
They understand the system well enough to solve the right one.
By creating visibility of priorities, decision-making and organisational capacity, leaders discovered something unexpected: the ability to focus. Leaders became more confident saying no to work that didn’t align with agreed priorities, creating greater capacity for the work that mattered most.
