Creating the conditions for better thinking

Innovation begins long before the first new idea. It happens when leaders create the confidence, trust and permission for people to think differently together.

The Social Contract provides us with a language, it provides us with a framework, it provides us with permission to have conversations that are more immediate, more direct and more caring.

CASE STUDY

Innovation begins long before the first new idea.

One organisation experienced how a shared language could create permission for better conversations and better thinking.

Across our work, we’ve consistently observed that innovation is rarely constrained by creativity. More often, it’s constrained by the environment people work within.

When expectations are unclear, feedback is avoided and difficult conversations are delayed, organisations become less curious. People stop challenging assumptions, share fewer ideas and spend more energy protecting what already exists than exploring what might be possible.

The organisations that innovate consistently create something different. They establish trust, encourage constructive challenge and provide a shared language that makes better conversations possible. Innovation becomes less about individual brilliance and more about collective learning.

Rather than focusing on behaviours in isolation, leaders and teams co-designed practical agreements about how they would communicate, challenge ideas and support one another. As conversations became more immediate, more caring and more constructive, people felt increasingly confident contributing new perspectives and solving problems together.

Innovation doesn’t happen because organisations ask people to be more creative.

It happens when people can think differently together.

The outcome wasn’t simply a stronger culture. It was an organisation better equipped to learn, adapt and continuously improve.
