CONDITION 07 • CONFIDENCE

Building leaders who back themselves

Confidence shapes the way people contribute. When confidence grows, so does ownership, innovation and leadership.

For me personally, I don’t think I would have had either the courage or the capacity to develop as much as I have.

CASE STUDY

Confidence is one of the least discussed drivers of performance.

One senior leader illustrated how confidence can grow through trust, constructive challenge and practical experimentation.

Confidence is one of the least discussed — and most influential — drivers of organisational performance.

Across our work, we’ve consistently observed that confidence shapes the way people contribute. When confidence is low, people hesitate. They wait for permission, avoid difficult conversations and become more focused on avoiding mistakes than creating outcomes. When confidence grows, so does ownership, innovation and leadership.

Unlike technical capability, confidence is rarely developed through training alone. It grows when people experience trust, receive constructive challenge and feel supported to explore uncertainty without fear of failure. In this sense, confidence is not simply an individual characteristic. It is a condition created by leadership and reinforced by organisational culture.

Through collaborative design, coaching and practical experimentation, they discovered the confidence to pursue new partnerships, engage communities in new ways and influence broader organisational change. That personal growth created wider organisational impact, increasing access to services and strengthening outcomes for the people the organisation existed to support.

Leadership confidence rarely stays with the individual.

It changes how teams think, collaborate and act.

While confidence doesn’t eliminate uncertainty, it gives people the belief to move through it. When confidence grows consistently across an organisation, culture and performance grow with it.
